Glacial Lakes Permaculture believes that good Permaculture design can solve many of the world's most pressing problems and needs, whether it be in the area of home food production, small-scale energy, or more broadly as it applies to relocalization.

Who We Are

Karl J. Schmidt is founder and owner of Glacial Lakes Permaculture and is chairperson of the board of directors of Glacial Lakes Permaculture Education, Inc., the non-profit wing of GLP.  He earned his first Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) in Australia from Bill Mollison, the co-founder of the Permaculture movement, and Geoff Lawton, director of the Permaculture Research Institute of Australia.  He recently earned a second Permaculture Design Certificate from IPEC (Instituto de Permacultura e Ecovilas do Cerrado) in Brazil, where he studied under Lucy Legan and André Soares.  Karl holds a BA in Geography, an MA in International Affairs (with an emphasis on international economic development), and a PhD in History.  He is an experienced classroom teacher, having taught at the university-level for 20 years; he recently taught a course titled Global Environmental Issues at SDSU and is working on developing additional sustainability-related study abroad opportunities for students at the university.

Karl is a founding member of Transition South Dakota and a member of Transition United States.

 

In the recent past, Karl has collaborated with other local permaculturists in offering ‘town talks’ and a weekend workshop on Permaculture.  His most recent international project involves collaborating with the ICPPC-Ecocenter in Stryszów, Poland in developing student service-learning opportunities.
